REEPRODUCE Intelligent Sorting Machine: Revolutionizing Recycling with AI and XRT Technologies
At Sense2Sort, we are proud to have successfully developed and demonstrated the semi-mobile Intelligent Sorting Machine (ISM), a groundbreaking innovation that combines Vision, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and X-ray Transmission (XRT) technologies. This cutting-edge system is designed to enhance the recycling processes for devices containing Neodymium (Nd) magnets, pushing the boundaries of efficiency and sustainability in the recycling industry.
A New Era of Recycling Technology
The REEPRODUCE project has entered its second phase, with demonstration phases now underway. Our goal is clear: to validate and improve recycling systems for Nd-magnets, ensuring that devices containing these valuable materials can be identified and processed with unmatched precision. This validation process is crucial in streamlining recycling workflows, allowing plants to recover rare materials more efficiently while reducing waste and costs.
First Demonstration: Indumetal, Spain
Our first successful demonstration took place at Indumetal Recycling in Spain, a leader in the recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and complex scrap across Europe. Based in the Basque Country, Indumetal is pioneering the recycling of high-value materials from electronic waste.
The semi-mobile sorting system was shipped to Indumetal for a series of tests and demonstrations. Through rigorous validation and optimization processes, the system was tested on-site to gather valuable data for further improvements. These tests were essential to ensure that our sorting machine is ready for the most demanding applications in recycling yards worldwide.
Upcoming Demonstration: REVAC, Norway
Building on the success in Spain, the next phase of the REEPRODUCE project will see our sorting machine tested at REVAC, one of Scandinavia’s largest and most advanced WEEE recycling facilities. Located in Norway, REVAC recycles over 70% of post-consumer electronics in the Norwegian market and operates under the highest standards, meeting Best Available Techniques (BAT) and BREFs regulations.
Here, the ISM system, equipped with sensor-based sorting technology and driven by AI, will identify and recover End-of-Life (EoL) devices containing Nd-magnets from electronic waste streams. This advanced sorting process is key to improving the efficiency of recycling operations and ensuring that valuable Neodymium is recovered from devices like HVAC compressors.
Driving Innovation and Sustainability
As part of the REEPRODUCE project, a comprehensive database will be created to track key information about devices containing Nd-magnets. This data will play a vital role in future recycling strategies and further enhance the system’s performance. REVAC will contribute by identifying Nd-based magnets in devices and supplying samples for ongoing testing and optimization.
The Intelligent Sorting Machine is a major leap forward in sustainable resource use, enabling recyclers to extract critical materials with unprecedented precision. By optimizing the recycling process, we are reducing reliance on virgin materials and supporting a circular economy.
